Week 6: Information on the 15% Term Project

Hi,
Here are the steps of how you will complete the project.
1. Go to the following website:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/podcasts/directory/
This website is the BBC radio podcasts directory. Here you can find hundreds of radio programs recorded and you can download these radio programs on your computer.
2. Click on Browse by A-Z link. This link will take you to radio programs with topics from A-Z.
3. Click on one of the letters, for example A. You will see a page showing different radio programs all about a topic starting with A.
4. Look at the names of the radio programs and choose a program you find interesting. Click on the Podcast link on the radio program. For example, if you click on Africa Today, you will find radio programs related with stories or news about Africa.
5. When you click on the Podcast, you will go to a page that shows the latest episodes (programs) you can download. Look at the titles and choose one you find interesting.
6. The latest episodes are given starting with the newest podcast posted [ATTENTION! the older podcasts are removed after a week and new podcasts are posted, so try to pick one from the latest posts!!!]
7. To download the radio program, right click on the download episode link (ATTENTION! if you left click, you can listen to the program but you cannot save it on your computer, so you should right click on the link and choose save as, then save the file on your computer).
8. Before you decide to use the podcast, listen to it first; if you find it too difficult or boring, etc. you may want to choose a different one.
9. When you have picked up your topic, you send me an e-mail to my
erkarkin@gmail.com address, and tell me what program you have decided to download (and copy paste the link as well so that I can go to the same program and download it). After I confirm that you can use it, you can start listening and transcribing the program. [ATTENTION! You must inform me as soon as you have decided on the program you want to download; so that I can check the program, download it as well (because I have to download the same program later to listen and assess your project), and send you a confirmation. Because the podcasts are removed after a week or so, we'll have to download them before they are removed!!!]. If you don't let me know and I don't download the same program, and you turn in your project and I don't have the program to listen to, you get no mark!...
10. You have to listen to 3 minutes of the program. The radio podcasts you will find are usually much longer than 3 minutes. So, if you have a program which is, for example 10 minutes long, you can share it with two other people. This means, 3 people can share the program and listen to different sections. Maximum 3 people can share a radio podcast, so even a podcast is 15 minutes long, still 3 people can share it maximum.
11. If you decide to share a podcast with other friends, you must inform me as well.
Thanks.

Week6: Term Project and Assignments

Dear all,
For those who are still unclear about the term project and assignments, here is a few reminders:
1. Term Project (15%) - This assignment requires you to download a radio program (at least 3 minutes long), listen to it and transcribe the content, and identify the main word stress of the content words [Wait for my following posts to find out more about how to do the project].
2. Self-assessment (5%) - This task requires you to come to my office and have your voices recorded while reading a short text. Later, towards the end of the course, after having looked at various aspects of pronunciation errors, I will ask you to listen to your recorded voices and evaluate your pronunciation according to specified criteria. So, before the midterms, those who have not come to my office yet should drop by a.s.a.p and complete the recording process, otherwise they will lose that 5 points!..
3. Mini Lessons (10%) - In pairs, or in groups of 3, you are supposed to prepare a ten-minute lesson in which you are going to focus on one aspect of English pronunciation. The lesson you are supposed to conduct should aim at teaching your friends (let's say your imaginary future students) that particular aspect of pronunciation. In this lesson, you will first teach the aspect with some explanations and examples on the board, playing some extracts or using some short video, etc.; then using some exercise sheets to test if your friends/ students have understood the aspect you have taught. When you decide on who you will work with and what pronunciation aspect you are going to teach, you will post a message here on the blog, to inform me and your friends so that we'll all be able to see who is doing what...
Thanks.

A useful website for Listening&Pronunciation

Dear all,
The following is a useful link suggested by three students at Mersin University ELT Program, as a part of their website evaluation project. See how detailed their descriptions are.
http://claweb.cla.unipd.it/home/mcanapero/listening.htm

This website contains listening and pronunciation exercises and passages taken from scientific publications. Users have the chance of both listening and reading the passages. Also, there are links to online listening and pronunciation practice and live radio in the website. The website consists of four main sections. Each sections contains subtitles. When users click on these subtitles, they can see the texts while they are listening to the passages.

  • First section is DICTATIONS. There are some short passages about science in this section. Users have the chance of reading the text while listening.
  • Second section is LISTENING & PRONUCATION. In this section, there are words relating to nuclear power, radiation, habitats and environmental degradation. These words are pronounced one by one in the section. This exercise is helpful in terms of learning correct pronunciation and stress of the words. Also, there is an Elementary Chemistry Quiz. The speaker gives some clues about the element and the user tries to guess. He/she can see the answers and read some extra information about the elements. Additionally, there are some exercises which include phonetics of English sounds. This section enable the users to find vowel sounds, diphthongs and difficult consonants one by one. Also, there are sample words for each sounds.
  • The third section is READING PASSAGES. In this part, there are reading passages about science. These passages are voiced and users can read the texts.
  • The last section is LISTENING & SPEAKING. There are a lot of exercises in this section. The website arranges a 5 –week course to improve listening and speaking skills.

Enjoy the experience.
